The Cadillac XLR was introduced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit as THE ultimate luxury American sports roadster, and it featured every technology Cadillac had in its arsenal of luxury at that time. Based on the C6 Corvette chassis and produced alongside it in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the XLR was Cadillac's halo car of the 2000s. The foundation of the XLR was an aluminum frame with composite floors for the ultimate in both rigidity and power to weight ratio. Under the hood went the all-aluminum Cadillac exclusive 4.6L Northstar V-8. This engine features dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and port fuel injection to produce 320hp and 310lb. ft. of torque. The XLR features a rear mounted five speed 5L50 automatic transmission that works in concert with electronic throttle control for the utmost smoothness with each and every gear change. On the chassis side, Cadillac installed "Magnasteer" variable effort power steering, "Stabilitrac" traction and stability control, and "Magnaride" magnetic ride control. These electronically variable shock absorbers utilized a magnetically charged damping fluid to soften or stiffen the shock absorbers based upon differing driving situations. GM was the originator of this now proliferate technology, and it made such an impact to performance that Ferrari (yes that expensive Italian sports car company) leased the technology from GM for use in their own cars. Not stopping there, Cadillac gave the XLR a fully independent double wishbone suspension system taken right from the Corvette including the composite transverse leaf springs. This sports car chassis was then clothed in Cadillac's "Art and Science" design language, with sharp curves and creases, HID headlights, LED taillights, and that ultimate party trick, the folding hard top roof. At the press of a button this ultimate luxury sports coupe becomes the ultimate luxury roadster in 30 seconds. It truly is a sight to behold watching the mechanisms artful movement and people stop in their tracks to watch the action. Inside, this XLR was spared no expense with Bvlgari designed instruments, real eucalyptus wood accents, real aluminum trim, and French stitched leather seating. These seats are heated and cooled, feature two-person memory, easy entry/exit, dual position lumbar support, and speakers built into the seats for the BOSE sound system. The center stack houses the media center with a touch screen AM/FM/CD stereo, satellite radio, navigation, and will even play DVD movies when parked. The climate control unit has automatic temperature control, and dual zones for both driver and passenger sides. This XLR was meant for drivers, and with that in mind Cadillac installed a standard "Heads Up" display that projects your speed and other pertinent information onto the windshield, so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Another trick technology featured on the XLR is a radar-based cruise control that can maintain a preset distance from other traffic and adjust your speed as necessary. This was unheard of at the time when this car came out! As you can plainly see, the Cadillac XLR was a real technology "tour de force" and was nominated for North American Car of the Year in 2004.
