Description

The 1970 Plymouth Rapid Transit Sales Brochure states "Road Runner was the country's first no-nonsense high-performance car. Its theme was race car simple: a rugged two-door coupe, deliberately devoid of interior and exterior frills, with maximum attention on engine, driveline, suspension and brakes." While some automotive historians might counter Plymouth's claims to being first, the Road Runner was the right car at the right time for mother Mopar to capitalize on the muscle car craze. The fully documented Road Runner you see here was sold new from Southern Chrysler-Plymouth, Inc. in High Point, NC to Mr. Charles David Harrington of Greensboro, NC for the lofty sum of $3,325. If only we could go back in time, right? The base Road Runner package was added to with a list of optional extras such as Basic Group, Tinted Glass, Air Conditioning, Exhaust Trumpets, Tachometer, Rear Seat Speakers, Hood Hold Down Pins, Performance Hood Paint, 14' Styled Road Wheels, Light Package, and $77.00 worth of truck freight to get it there. Time changes all things, and this Road Runner hasn't been excluded from that. The 383CI V-8 under the hood has received a modern Holley Street Warrior 4-barrel carburetor (the original Carter AFB is still with the car), Accel chrome coil, Blue Streak 8mm wires, and CompCams 23-710-9 camshaft. These components work in concert to bring a little more power and a very powerful sound emanating from the aftermarket dual exhaust system. A large aluminum radiator has replaced the factory copper/brass unit and provides appropriate temperature control, even on the hottest Florida afternoons. The only other notable change is the addition of rear air shocks that can be filled from under the driver's side rear fender. Outside of these few modifications, this Road Runner is much as it left the factory. The EF8 Ivy Green Metallic paint has been brought up to modern standards with a basecoat/clearcoat finish. Fresh stripes look crisp on the car, and the white letter BFG's are the muscle car tire of choice. Inside the vinyl bench seat upholstery has been replaced, but outside of that the interior is very much in its original condition. The factory 3-speed manual transmission (the standard transmission option for 1970, as the four speed became an option) shifts smooth and provides plenty of gear when combined with the stock 8 3/4in Chrysler rear axle with 3.23 ring and pinion. Brakes are manual drums, 11"x3" heavy duty up front, and 11"x2 1/2" out back. Suspension is classic Mopar, torsion bar front, leaf spring rear, with optional power steering making this an easy driver. This Road Runner has a build sheet and bill of sale with it, and the fender tag is present and accounted for. It does not appear to have ever been fully restored, just receiving careful maintenance and parts replacement as necessary through the years. Classic Mopars are some of the hottest cars on the collector car market, and an air-conditioned Road Runner has to be high on that list.
